Lake Cook Plumbing isn’t just a service contractor: we’re a part of the community, and as such we have responsibilities beyond that of a small business.  That’s why we’ve thrown in our hat for this Breast Cancer Awareness Month by offering ten dollars of our fee on every job we do to go straight to the Fight Against Breast Cancer.  We’re very excited to be a part of this fantastic cause!  So we thought we’d do a bit of an informational blog about why we think this cause is so important.

Statistics of Breast Cancer

We’ll start with some of the more concerning statistics, because the reality of breast cancer is, of course, very upsetting.  About 1 in 8 women (approx. 12%) of women in the U.S. will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime.  The difference between invasive and non-invasive (sometimes called “in situ”) breast cancer is that non-invasive cancers stay within the lobules they form in, whereas invasive cancers spread to the normal, healthy tissues and become more problematic.  There are 2.8 million women with a history of breast cancer in the U.S., and rates of risk approximately double if a woman has a first degree relative who has been diagnosed.  Breast cancer, despite massive advancements, is still a severe risk in its latest stages.  The two largest risk factors are gender (being a woman) and age (growing older), and currently breast cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed form of cancer in the U.S.

But here’s where the good news comes in: a recent 5 year study showed that, for people who caught their cancer in Stage 1, there was survival rate of 100%.  That means that catching a tumor early on practically guarantees you can beat this disease.  Rates of breast cancer are on the decline due to increased awareness, and survival rates have increased. We’ve still got a long way to go, but with modern medicine and so many people rallying to the cause, the solution is within our reach.
