Septic System May Have Failed, Causing Backup

Having sewage backing up into your home is anything but pleasant. If your home has a septic system, it’s possible that this is the root of your problem.

Septic systems can easily become clogged, as its main purpose is to clean the waste flushed down your toilets, sinks, and other plumbing fixtures and send it outside. The tank separates solids from other waste, and sends water to the leaching field. Your septic system can fail when it doesn’t leach the water discharged to it quickly enough.

But, how will you know if it’s your septic system or something else causing the problem?

Determine the Cause of Your Clog

Learning how to diagnose your drain system troubles can be extremely helpful. You will know exactly what the problem is and know when it’s time to call in a Lake Cook Plumbing professional.

  1. Do you smell something foul near the tub, sink, or shower? This could be from blockages in the vents, damage to the toilet’s wax ring, other drain clogs that are hosting bacteria, or a cracked vent line. If you have a vent line that’s broken in any way, sewer gas can leak into your home so it’s best to get it looked at as soon as possible!
  2. Is a toilet or sink backing up? When only one drain in your home is clogged, that’s probably a sign that it’s just that drain and not your entire system. You can try unclogging it yourself with a plunger or coat hanger, but a professional snaking job might be your best bet.
  3. Do you have more than one toilet or sink that’s backing up? This is usually cause for concern, as it has to do with the whole system being clogged. There are a number of different reasons this can happen – tree roots that have broken in the main sewer line, the main line is clogged up, backed up vent, or if you have a septic system it could be full and needs to be emptied.
  4. Is your septic tank damaged? Look for fixtures that drain extra slow, foul odors inside and outside your home, soggy soil around the septic tank, or sewage in the yard.

Lake Cook Plumbing can diagnose and repair your sewage backup problems, septic system or not. Give us a call today!
